To the north is the Antarctic Ocean.

Physical

The climate of Antarctica is extremely arctic. The predominant terrain is glacial.

Prominent features include the Mountains of Madness and the Savage Land. Erebus is one of the Earth’s largest volcanoes.

History

With isolated exceptions, Antarctica has been uninhabited for millions of years. One of the first explorers of the continent was Arthur Gordon Pym, who landed there in 1836. Some of those who followed in his footsteps include Ernest Shackleton, Robert Scott, Admiral Richard Byrd and Roald Amundsen.
