The Known World
Antarctica is a continent.
To the north is the Antarctic Ocean.
The climate of Antarctica is extremely arctic. The predominant terrain is glacial.
With isolated exceptions, Antarctica has been uninhabited for millions of years. One of the first explorers of the continent was Arthur Gordon Pym, who landed there in 1836. Some of those who followed in his footsteps include Ernest Shackleton, Robert Scott, Admiral Richard Byrd and Roald Amundsen.
